This is a blog about this site, which introduces the lesser-known Emanuel Bach (C. P. E. Bach).
The Performance Quoted on the Homepage
I have featured three YouTube videos on the homepage. I aimed to select pieces that are characteristic and captivating of Emanuel Bach. When it comes to Emanuel Bachʼs representative works, I believe the first to come to mind are his keyboard concertos and solo keyboard pieces. I chose two pieces from the keyboard concertos and one solo piece. Among the keyboard concertos, one is performed with period instruments including a harpsichord, and the other is performed on a modern piano. The first piece featured is the second movement of the keyboard concerto Wq. 17. I find that many of the second movements in the concertos of Emanuel Bach and Mozart are particularly captivating. As I wrote in "The Charm of the Second Movements in Emanuel Bachʼs Concertos", many of the second movements in major key pieces are in minor keys, and vice versa. However, I thought a major key piece would be more suitable for the homepage, so I chose the keyboard concerto Wq. 17.
There are several performances available on YouTube, but I avoided those with a tempo that is too slow. The choice is somewhat subjective, but I selected the performance by Spányi, who has performed almost all of the keyboard concertos.
For the second piece, I chose from the solo works. This is also a performance by Spányi of the first movement of Wq. 48-3, using a clavichord, which was widely used in homes at the time.
For the third piece, there was an option to include a symphony, but I chose a keyboard concerto performed on the piano. It is a performance of the first movement of the keyboard concerto Wq. 23 by Rische.
